best music you never know.

hmmm boris.. akhirnya saya menyempatkan diri untuk masukin band ini ke blog.. boris is one of the many Japanese band that I adore... mereka termasuk sulit dikategorikan dalam sebuah genre ada yang menyebut mereka drone, doom, stoner rock sludge rock, harsh noise, ambient, post-rock, psychedelic rock and even straight old fashioned rock... memang mereka selalu berimprovisasi dari album ke album.. band yang bermula dari tahun 1993 ini kalau menurut saya pribadi adalah band yang sangat sangat memuja noise.

Boris yang beranggotakan Atsuo pada drums dan backing vocal, Takeshi guitar, bass dan vocal juga yg terutama satu2nya perempuan dalam band ini Wata pada guitar dan vocal. dari segi musikalitas satu hal yang membuat saya amazed to this band.. keberanian mereka untuk tidak konsisten pada sebuah typical musical composition... hal ini terlihat jelas dari flowing of diverse idea that they put in their sounds and albums.

mungkin dalam blog ini saya tidak akan me-review semua albumnya.. karena boris merilis banyak sekali full length album juga collaboration dan split album. maka saya hanya akan coba mereview beberapa key album mereka. dalam debut album mereka di tahun 1996 'absolutego' mereka benar benar mengikuti jejak inspirasi mereka the melvin, nama boris pun mereka ambil dari salah satu judul lagu the melvin. album ini penuh dengan nuansa experimental doom dengan sound2 gitar yang sangat heavy.. at that time this was consider experimental by most people.

dalam album kedua mereka 'amplifier worship' di tahun 2000 benar-benar seperti judul albumnya.. kaya dengan sound sound doom metal digabungkan dengan elemen elemen eksperimental. dalam album ini benar benar membuat saya terhentak dengan evolusi sound mereka, komposisi lagu yang sangat tidak 'biasa' (coming from a guy that used to hear lame metal bands and early post-rock music.. hahaha)
nah dalam album ketiganya 'flood' mereka tetap tidak meninggalkan noise worshipping habitnya dan menambahkan sedikit unsur psychedelic di album ini... that aroused me to some point that made me realized.. this band is growing... and it's growing rapidly by sounds compositions and experimental sense in music...

ok now we're moving on.. dalam album 'akuma no uta' mereka langsung melepaskan straight rock music dalam album ini... album yang dalam bahasa inggrisnya 'the devil songs' memang kaya dengan unsur unsur straight rock tanpa meninggalkan elemen elemen dasar boris seperti post-punk, post-rock dan juga drone sludge doom..
they even made an album to soundtrack a movie that only exist in their imagination.. dan ini beneran terjadi, mereka merilis album soundtrack to film 'mabuta no ura' yang tidak ada filmnya sama sekali... hahaha kalau kalian berfikir ini absurd well.. this is the essence of boris.. mereka membuat soundtrack kepada sebuah film yang tidak pernah ada dan hanya diimajinasikan oleh mereka.. hmmm they made a soundtrack and later on imagining the visionary movie.. that is pure genius.

ok comes to the best release of boris full length album... 'pink' was released on 2006 yesss the cover somewhat figure a character of satan in it.. saya berpikiran dengan judul pink tapi ada sedikit tersembunyi gambar sang setan.. apakah musiknya akan kembali ke doom metal seperti jaman dahulu... ternyata tidak mereka justru fokus kepada komposisi lagu lagu penuh dengan eksperimen dan sound sound gitar yang fantastis. saya berani bilang fantastis karena album ini yang mendapat banyak pujian dari kritikus dan pengikut fanatik boris. this is their best album yet (kalo gak dihitung dengan split dan kolaborasi yah haha)

boris memang banyak berkolaborasi dengan band band dan musisi musisi handal, nama nama besar seperti band drone doom metal dari amerika sunn o))) juga merzbow.. but the album that caught me the most adalah kolaborasi mereka dengan sunn o))) album yang berjudulkan 'altar' ini membuat saya speechless selama satu jam mendengarkan albumnya.. (sedikit terpana dan gelisah gak jelas). words lost their meaning.. lets just say that waktu mendengarkan album ini saya membayangkan diri saya berada di dalam perut monster dan monster itu sedang merintih kesakitan (hahaha this is for real guyz)

last but not least kolaborasi dengan gitaris psychedelic jepang Michio Kurihara.. ini my fave album of them all.. sound mereka berbeda sekali tetapi tetap ciri khas boris kental sekali dalam album ini.. Michio Kurihara sepertinya blends in very well with boris. of all the albums saya merekomendasikan untuk mendengarkan album ini. upbeat and breezy I might say.

ok enough already... the other collaboration albums are also great.. picturing boris conducting musical composition with tomsk, sunn o)) and other great bands
